WHY HE COULDN’T WALK AWAY: YELLOWSTONE STAR REVEALS THE REAL REASON FOR KAYCE SPINOFF
Kayce Dutton may have closed one chapter at the end of Yellowstone season 5, but his story is far from over.
In a recent interview with People, Luke Grimes opened up about saying goodbye to Kayce — and why he ultimately chose to return for Y: Marshals. Like the fans, Grimes admitted he didn’t want Yellowstone to end. “Nobody wanted it to be over,” he said. “The actors didn’t want it, and the studio and network certainly didn’t want it either.”
Grimes explained that wrapping the series felt like losing a part of his life. “On the last day of shooting, I thought that was it. Seven years of playing this man, and suddenly he was gone. It was emotional, like saying goodbye to family.”
But a few months later, everything changed. Sheridan and the creative team pitched a concept that reignited his excitement. “Finally came along a really good idea,” Grimes recalled. “If it was just watching Kayce be happy, that wouldn’t be much of a story. But this idea? It really hooked me — and I think it will hook the audience too.”
Familiar Faces and a New Challenge
In Y: Marshals, Kayce joins an elite U.S. Marshals team. The series will follow him as he blends his cowboy roots and Navy SEAL training to bring justice to Montana. The job won’t be easy — he and his team must juggle duty, family, and the heavy psychological toll of being the last line of defense in a violent world.
While the series will feature the action fans expect, it will break away from Yellowstone’s serialized format. As a CBS procedural, Y: Marshals will lean into case-of-the-week storytelling, giving viewers a fresh but familiar experience.
Grimes teased that “familiar faces” will appear alongside Kayce, suggesting Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate (Brecken Merrill) will remain central to his journey. “Kayce is back to who he really is and his soul,” Grimes shared, hinting that new challenges will soon pull him back into action.

A Spinoff That’s Both Yellowstone and Something New
Unlike Yellowstone, which often pushed boundaries with its intense storytelling, CBS is likely to keep Y: Marshals closer to network television standards. Even so, the emotional core of Kayce’s character — his family and his fight for justice — will stay intact.
Fans are eager to learn what drives Kayce to pick up his badge again, especially after walking away from his role as livestock commissioner in the main series. His family’s involvement will likely be the heart of the show, just as it was in Yellowstone.
Meanwhile, the Yellowstone universe continues to grow. Another spinoff, The Madison starring Michelle Pfeiffer, is currently filming and will stream on Paramount+.
With Grimes’ passion for the story and Sheridan’s talent for world-building, Y: Marshals is shaping up to be a must-watch — part continuation, part reinvention, and all Kayce Dutton.
