REMEMBERING ROBERT REDFORD: THE HOLLYWOOD LEGEND WHO ALMOST BECAME JOHN DUTTON
Remembering a Hollywood Icon
Robert Redford, one of the most celebrated actors of the 20th century, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. He was 89. Best known for his role as the Sundance Kid in the 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Redford built a career that spanned decades, with standout performances in The Sting, All the President’s Men, The Great Gatsby, and Jeremiah Johnson.
Although his roles were diverse, audiences and producers alike often saw Redford as the face of the Western. His rugged charm and magnetic screen presence made him a natural fit for the genre, and for years he embodied the spirit of frontier storytelling on screen.

The Yellowstone Connection
Few fans know that before Kevin Costner took the reins as John Dutton, HBO once wanted Robert Redford for the role. When Taylor Sheridan first pitched Yellowstone, he sold the idea to HBO. Executives showed interest, but only under one condition: Robert Redford had to lead the series.
Sheridan later recalled the experience in a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They said, ‘If you can get us Robert Redford, we’ll greenlight the pilot.’ And so I did. Robert agreed to come out of retirement.” But by the time Sheridan had secured the legendary actor, HBO reportedly shifted direction, deciding the project no longer aligned with their vision.
HBO’s Missed Opportunity
Sheridan described a lunch meeting in West Los Angeles where HBO executives explained their reasoning. According to him, the network felt Yellowstone was “too Middle America” and out of step with the avant-garde image HBO wanted to project. One executive even suggested rural Montana should be a park, not a setting for a series.
With HBO’s rejection, Sheridan returned to the drawing board. Eventually, Paramount stepped in, Kevin Costner joined as John Dutton, and the rest became television history. Yet the story leaves fans wondering what Yellowstone might have looked like with Robert Redford in the saddle.
A Legacy Beyond Roles
Robert Redford’s career was far greater than any single part. He embodied the essence of American cinema, blending star power with authenticity. Beyond acting, he directed, produced, and founded the Sundance Film Festival, shaping generations of filmmakers and storytellers.
As the world reflects on his passing, fans celebrate not just the roles he played but the doors he opened for others. His connection to Yellowstone may have been brief, but it highlights the respect he commanded in Hollywood until the very end.
Robert Redford leaves behind a legacy that is both timeless and vast. And while he never became John Dutton, he will forever remain one of the most iconic Western stars to ever grace the screen. Rest in peace, Sundance Kid.
