MARISKA HARGITAY TELLS FANS NOT TO “GIVE UP HOPE” ON BENSON & STABLER ENDGAME
After 27 years of Law & Order: SVU, the slow burn between Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler still fuels one of television’s most passionate debates. Now, Mariska Hargitay herself is fanning the flames.
During NBC’s Preview Event, the actress was asked about the possibility of Benson and Stabler (Christopher Meloni) finally becoming a couple. With a knowing smile, she told fans to “never give up hope.” Was it a hint of what’s to come, or simply her joy at reuniting with her longtime co-star? Either way, the tease has reignited speculation ahead of Season 27.
History, Heartbreak, and Almost Kisses
In an extended preview, Hargitay reflected on why fans remain so invested. “Part of the story, because we’ve been together so long, is really built on history,” she explained. That history includes not only shared victories but also painful losses, such as the death of Stabler’s wife, Kathy, which brought the two characters back into each other’s orbit.
Since then, their relationship has been a cycle of high-stakes reunions and near-misses. Most notably, the episode “Blood Out” delivered a long-awaited almost-kiss, leaving fans with the hope that one day the moment would finally arrive.
Winds of Change in Season 27
As the series enters its 27th season, major shifts are already underway. Michele Fazekas takes over as SVU’s first female showrunner, succeeding David Graziano. Longtime writers Julie Martin and Norberto Barba are stepping aside, though Barba will continue directing. On-screen, Juliana Aidén Martinez and Octavio Pisano depart, with Pisano appearing in the premiere, while Aimé Donna Kelly and Kelli Giddish both become series regulars.
Fazekas’ arrival is especially intriguing to fans of Benson and Stabler. She co-wrote the iconic episode “Fault,” which redefined their dynamic. The new season opens with “In the Wind” on September 25, featuring a guest appearance by Meloni. Set photos also suggest returns from franchise veterans, including Dann Florek’s Donald Cragen and Dean Winters’ Brian Cassidy.

What Comes Next?
With old faces returning and new leadership behind the scenes, Season 27 feels like a turning point. Hargitay’s playful “don’t give up hope” has only heightened expectations that Benson and Stabler’s story might finally find resolution. Whether that means romance, closure, or another near-miss remains to be seen, but fans are ready for answers.
