Luke Grimes is ‘changing paths’ in first look at Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals

Kayce is “trying to find a new beginning” on the CBS series. Kayce Dutton’s story isn’t over.

When Yellowstone ended, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his sister, Beth (Kelly Reilly), sold all but a piece of their family’s land to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) with the stipulation that Thomas could never develop or sell the land. He agreed.

However, Kayce managed to keep the East Camp for his family — wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) — and their 300 cows. But given the turmoil that the Dutton family experienced toward the end of the flagship series — Kayce lost both his father, John (Kevin Costner), and his brother, Jamie (Wes Bentley) — it won’t come as a surprise that the family’s youngest sibling is looking for a new path.

Y: Marshals — one of a few Yellowstone spinoffs fans are looking forward to — will explore Kayce’s career as a U.S. Marshal. According to the series’ official logline, Kayce joins “an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first look at the show. In the very first footage from Y: Marshals, which you can watch above, Kayce can be seen chasing down some cars on horseback as his voiceover says, “I’m changing paths, trying to find a new beginning.”

We don’t know much else about the show at this point, aside from a bit of casting. In addition to Grimes, Merrill, Birmingham, and Mo Brings Plenty are all set to reprise their Yellowstone roles. In terms of new faces, Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade), Arielle Kebbel (Rescue: HI-Surf), Ash Santos (Mayor of Kingstown), and Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon) will play Kayce’s fellow marshals, along with Brett Cullen (Winning Time) as their boss.

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is on board as an executive producer, with SEAL Team‘s Spencer Hudnut serving as showrunner.

Y: Marshals is set to premiere mid-season on CBS.
