DETECTIVE JALEN SHAW LEAVES LAW & ORDER — MEHCAD BROOKS BIDS FAREWELL
The Law & Order franchise is saying goodbye to one of its standout heroes. Detective Jalen Shaw, played by Mehcad Brooks, has left the 27th Precinct in Season 25, marking the end of a memorable run for the cool-headed investigator.
Shaw’s Time on the Squad
Shaw joined the series in Season 22 and quickly became a key figure. His calm interrogation style and strong moral compass set him apart. For three seasons, he fought for victims with passion and precision. Partnered with Vincent Riley (Reid Scott), the two became a sharp investigative team under Lt. Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney).
A Low-Drama Exit
Unlike some explosive Law & Order exits, Shaw’s departure is understated. In the Season 25 premiere, “Street Justice,” Brady explains that Shaw has accepted a new post at Brooklyn’s 88th Precinct. Riley takes the news in stride, saying, “I knew he wanted to get back to Brooklyn, so good for him. I’m gonna miss that guy, though.”

Mehcad Brooks Reflects
When Season 24 wrapped, Brooks shared a heartfelt Instagram post with co-stars Scott and Tierney. He called the experience “amazing, intense, and deeply grounding,” praising both the cast and crew for their dedication. Scott also posted the same photo, calling his colleagues “the best” and crediting them with making tough filming days much brighter.
A Favorite Across the Franchise
Brooks also made an impression beyond the flagship series. During a Law & Order: SVU crossover, he bonded with Mariska Hargitay, who called him “an amazing specimen.” She even joked about recreating Dirty Dancing with him on set. “It’s like acting with a superhero,” she said, praising his kindness and energy.
What Comes Next
Although Shaw has left the 2-7, the storyline leaves the door open. His transfer to Brooklyn means fans may see him again down the road. For now, Mehcad Brooks steps away with his character’s legacy intact—an investigator remembered for integrity, conviction, and heart.
