Aimé Donna Kelly Moves from Guest Role to Series Regular on Law & Order: SVU
Aimé Donna Kelly’s journey on Law & Order: SVU has taken an exciting turn. Initially appearing as a guest character, she now joins the cast full-time as Capt. Renee Curry alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson. Kelly describes the experience as a thrilling learning opportunity, both on-screen and off.
From Guest Appearance to Full-Time Role
In Season 22, Kelly first played Curry, an IAB captain who questioned Benson’s actions during a case. “I was really proud of that first episode,” Kelly recalls. “Curry challenges Benson but also shows empathy. She fights for truth and justice.”
Her initial appearances showcased a by-the-book officer meeting Benson, who sometimes toes the line. “Benson teaches her that pushing back at authority can be necessary,” Kelly explains. “For Curry, it’s nerve-wracking but exciting because it serves justice.”
After three episodes across Seasons 22 and 23, Kelly learned the show wanted her back for Season 25. She initially told her students at Marymount Manhattan College she’d be gone for a few days. Soon, she realized Curry would appear in multiple episodes, ultimately appearing in ten out of thirteen that season.
Learning From Mariska Hargitay
Kelly credits Hargitay for her mentorship. “On set, I learn so much from Mariska, and it translates to the characters,” Kelly says. Hargitay agrees: “We learn from each other. Aimé is a phenomenal actor and teacher, but off-screen, she’s a little buttercup!”
The on-set atmosphere contributes to the cast’s strong performances. “Mariska’s energy sets the tone,” Kelly notes. “It spreads joy, laughter, and leadership across everyone.” She adds that the cast ensures new members feel supported while tackling SVU’s challenging material.

Working With SVU Legends
Kelly praises the influence of other longtime cast members, like Ice-T, whose stories and advice bring energy and wisdom to the set. “He’s a wealth of knowledge,” she says. She also reflects on the return of Kelli Giddish, calling it “like the family getting back together.” The combination of returning stars and fresh dynamics makes the set feel like home.
What to Expect From Curry in Season 27
Season 27 will show a more confident, assertive Curry. Kelly teases, “You’ll see a badass side of Curry that was quieter in IAB. Now, she’s stepping up as a leader, confident and unapologetically herself.” Curry’s snark and sass are expected to shine this season, complementing Benson’s style.
Kelly adds that the two captains dynamic will continue, and she is ready to embrace whatever direction the writers take. “Benson and Curry are different but work well together. It’s a great team — let’s not break it.”
Growth as an Artist
Reflecting on her time with SVU, Kelly says the experience has strengthened her as both an artist and a person. “I’ve grown in ways I wouldn’t have without this show. I’m grateful to be part of this ensemble.”
