General Hospital Stars Lament the State of Love In the Afternoon: ‘They Should Get Back to Couples’
There are plenty of hookups in daytime and while weddings still happen, so do the lies, affairs and divorces. This past weekend, two of the industry’s most recognized stars got together to talk about the lack of couples these days and looked back on some of soaps most memorable ones.
On November 16, General Hospital’s Genie Francis (Laura) joined her castmate Maurice Benard (Sonny) on his State of Mind podcast. When the latter brought up the fact that the powers that be “don’t do couples anymore,” Francis agreed, “They don’t.” Benard reflected on the time when Francis had returned to the ABC soap in 1993, the same time he had started, and brought up such duos as Sonny and Brenda, Luke and Laura, Lois and Ned, Jason and Robin and stated, “Couples were the thing.”

Noting that “they’re not doing as many,” and wondering why, Francis replied, “I don’t know why,” then shared her thoughts, “Do you think the pandemic changed it because of intimacy?” While Benard thought that could very well be a possibility, he added, “Maybe, yeah. I mean, it could be. I truly believe… look I don’t question anybody how they’re doing their jobs, but they should get back to couples. I think that’s what helps.” And his longtime castmate again agreed that yes, it does help.
